The Republic of Tajikistan, independent since Sep 9, 1991, is a nation in Inner Asia (Asia, see map), bordered by Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, and Afghanistan. Tajikistan occupies an area of 143,100 km2 with a population of about 6.8 million, dominated by the Persian-speaking Tajiks (80%).
