Theodotus probably broke with the earlier Theodotians (Theodotus the Tanner). According to Hippolytus (Haer. VII 36.2), controversy had arisen over whether Jesus had been a charismatically gifted human individual or could appropriately be described as God after his resurrection. Clearly Heb 5:6 and 7:3 played a special role in this dispute; they state that Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek and that the latter, being without genealogy, must be superior to Jesus.
