Until 1918 he was a lecturer at the Theological Academy of St. Petersburg, a leading representative of the reform-oriented forces on the All-Russian Church Council of 1917/1918 (Russia: III), and in the 1920s a supporter of the so-called “Living Church” movement, which advocated reforms and cooperation with the Soviet regime.
