(Apr 25, 1881, Leipzig – Nov 8, 1935, Halle an der Salle), New Testament scholar at Leiden (1914–1929), Kiel (1929–1935), and Halle (1935). In his commentaries (2 Corinthians, Hebrews, the Catholic Epistles, Barnabas) and a wealth of other publications (including studies of the Sermon on the Mount and the NT doctrine of sin), he proved himself an advocate of liberal theology and a representative of the History of Religions school.
