(Apr 7, 1896, Plymouth – Jan 25, 1971, London), pediatrician and psychoanalyst. Winnicott coined the term transitional object in the intermediate stage of development, in which the initial, still vague structures of relationship between the developing subject and objects find expression in a so-called intermediate space. This precursor of what will later be an actual object is a familiar, trusted item that serves to relieve fear (of being abandoned) – a doll, a teddy bear, a security blanket.
