At the same time as the liturgical movement, and no doubt in consequence of it, there arose in the Church a movement whose object was to bring the Bible back into Catholic life and thought. This movement did not originate from the higher institutions of the Church. As a movement, it came “from below”, that is, from the vital instinct of faith working in the Church as a whole. The biblical movement of the 20th century, starting in Germany at the time of the First World War, has several sources :
