To set the concept of peace in its proper framework in contemporary theology, we must begin by observing with Vatican II that the gospel’s message of peace stands forth today with new clarity, and in harmony with the best efforts and aspirations of mankind (Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, art. 77). Hence this article will first show the central position which the idea of peace occupies in Scripture and in the present situation of mankind, and then try to build up a (systematic and practical) theology of peace.
