1. Old Testament. Until a late period in its history the religion of the ОТ knew of no resurrection of the body. Human life is limited to this world. This does not mean that man ceases to exist altogether at death, when God withdraws from him the spirit by which he became a “living soul”, i. e., a living being (Gen 2:7) and the body returns to the dust from which it was formed (Gen 3:19).
