§ 776. Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥusain b. ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Sīnā was born in 370/980 and died in 428/1037 (see pl. ii §§ 4, 78, etc.).

§ 777. Description of a Persian illustrated work on automata, watches, etc., composed in the time of the caliph Nāṣir (575–622/ 1180–1225): in Ilahiyat Fakültesi Dergisi, 1952/2–3 pp. 58–60 (see Oriens vii/1 p. 115).

§ 778. Badīʿ al-Zamān Ismāʿīl b. al-Razzāz al-Jazarī.

(K. fī maʿrifat al-ḥiyal al-handasīyah), an Arabic work written in 602/1205–6 for the Urtuqid ruler of Āmid, Maḥmūd b. M. b. Qarā Arslān: see Brockelmann Sptbd. i p. 902.

Persian translation of unknown authorship and date, divided like the original into six nauʿs: Blochet ii 801–2 (ah 1291/1874). Probably Rieu ii 839a (“treatise on mechanical contrivances”. ah 1216/1801) is a translation of the same work.

§ 779. ʿAlāʾ [al-Dīn] al-Kirmānī composed for the Ottoman Sulṭān Bāyazīd K̲h̲ān [i.e. either, and more probably, Bāyazīd i, who reigned from 792/1389 to 805/1402, on Bāyazīd ii, who reigned from 886/1481 to 918/1512] a treatise describing an improved spherical instrument for finding the qiblah (mss.: Blochet ii 793, Leyden iii p. 153 no. 1589). Badāʾiʿ al-ʿamal fī ṣanāʾiʿ al-ḥiyal (beg. Ḥamdī fuzūn az ḥadd i ʿadd u iḥṣā), on some mechanical contrivances (a clock, an hour-glass, a qiblah-numā, etc.), dedicated to Abū ’l-Muẓaffar Sulṭān Muḥammad K̲h̲ān [i.e. either Muḥammad i b. Bāyazīd, ah 805–24/1402–21, or Muḥammad ii b. Murād, ah 855–86/ 1451–81] and divided into four bābs and a k̲h̲ātimah: Bodleian 1872 (113 foll. Many drawings. N.d.).

Miʿyār al-ʿuqūl dar aʿmāl i jarr i t̲h̲aqīl (beg. al-Ḥ. l. ’l. rafaʿa maqādīra ahli ’l-kamāl (so Ivanow and Nad̲h̲īr Aḥmad, but Ross-Browne 14 (2) begins Baʿd z ḥamd i Kirdgār u durūd bar Nabī i muk̲h̲tār)), a short treatise on mechanics, “obviously compiled from European works” (Ivanow) and divided into five bābs, by Abū ʿAlī (A. ʿA.
