§ 97. M. Ẓahīr al-Dīn b. M. Masʿūd K̲h̲ān Bahādur Bilgrāmī, Professor of Persian at Canning College, Lucknow, composed in 1284/1867–8
- Targ̲h̲īb al-Furqān, an attempt to show that inability to pronounce Arabic correctly and ignorance of the rules of tajwīd are not valid excuses for leaving the Qurʾān unread;—

§ 98. Saiyid Abū ’l-K̲h̲air Muḥammad Muʿīn al-Dīn ibn K̲h̲airāt ʿAlī Mas̲h̲hadI Karawī was learned in several branches of knowledge but especially in the Riyāḍīyāt. Raḥmān ʿAlī, a pupil of his, mentions eleven of his works, including treatises on theology, astronomy, medicine and logic. While performing the pilgrimage in 1281/1865, he conceived the idea of writing a work on the Qurʾānic sciences (no. 1 below). On his return to India he was appointed mudarris in a madrasah at Mirzāpūr and in consequence of the duties of his appointment made slow progress with his task. He died at Aḥmadābād Nārah on 3 Rabīʿ i 1304/1886.
