Note 1

Editio princeps of this study on the Low Countries and its population at the time of the Roman Empire.

Note 2

In the dedicatory to Philip de Croy Divaeus affirms to have divided his work on the early history of the Netherlands into two books: a first about the Roman period, which he now publishes; a second, which he has the intention to write soon, devoted to the Frankish invasions and the subsequent history of the country. This second book does not seem to have materialized.

Note 3

The cost-accounting note in Arch. 4, folio 102, gives the following details about the 'Antiquitates Belgicae Divei': on 1 December 1565 is entered 'p[our] privilege et la carte ansemble' 10 florins Carolus guilders (This expense is more detailed in Arch. 3, folio 39, in an entry under the same date of 1 December 1565, titled 'Antiquitates Galliae Belgicae': 'J'ay payé à Monsr. The wages for composing and printing quires A-D are entered on 9 February and 2 March 1566, for printing quire E and the map on 17 March 1566. They amount to 7 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers Of the edition 550 copies were printed. In all, with the map and the 'imperfections', 6 reams of paper 'petit bastard' were used, which, at 1 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers per ream, came to 8 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers, bringing the overall costs to 26 florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers (= a new error made by Plantin in adding the expenses: 17 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers + 8 florins Carolus guilders 8 stuivers amount to 25 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers, not florins Carolus guilders 6 stuivers The total costs, when straightening out the two errors made by Plantin, were in fact 26 florins Carolus guilders 16 stuivers). Plantin concluded 'qui est la pièce 1 [stuivers]. Nous le vendons -'.
