SEG Search Tips
Looking for a record?There are various methods to obtain a record.
A Search
1 Use the Search Box to find an entry by volume and inscription number
- Enter the required volume and inscription number, divided by a space, in the [Search Box], and select the title Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum in the drop down right of the [Search Box].
- For example: "57 100" (including quotes) will create a search for SEG volume 57, inscription 100.
- If the entry exists, it will be at the top of the search result list. If the entry is part of a lemma with multiple inscriptions, that entry will be listed on top. For example "50 1" is part of SEG 50 1-168.
2 Use the Search Box to find all inscriptions in a certain region
- For example, find all entries with inscriptions within the region Macedonia:
- Enter the required region name in the [Search Box], as follows: tei_propername:"Macedonia" (including the double quotes "" around Babylonia) and select the title Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum.
- The search result will show a list of all inscriptions in Babylonia.
3 Use the Search Box to find all inscriptions in a certain place
- For example, find all entries with inscriptions within the place Babylon
- Enter the required place name in the Search Box, as follows: tei_propername:"Babylon" (including the double quotes "" around Babylon) and select the title Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum.
- The search result will show a list of all inscriptions in Babylon
4 Use the Search Box to find all inscriptions in a large region ("super region")
- For example, find all entries with inscriptions within the region East
- Enter the required larger region name in the Search Box, as follows: tei_propername:"East" (including the double quotes around East) and select the title Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum.
- The search result will show a list of all inscriptions in East
Combine search terms
- Search terms may be combine these terms. In that case, just add a + sign between the search strings.
- For example: Enter the string tei_propername:"East" + Apollo to search for all records in the East, that contain the name Apollo.
B Browse the entries and content listings
1 Use the Browse lists for regions looking for all inscriptions
- Visit the SEG page (http://referenceworks.brillonline.com/browse/supplementum-epigraphicum-graecum)
- Click the Contents tab, just below the A to Z list
- Click the geographical regions East
- Click Egypt
- Look for the item you need (or search within the page with Ctrl-F for an item).
Please note that lists can be quite long, and therefore might take some time to load.
2 Use the browse lists to consult Indices
All the indices that appear in the back of the printed volumes have been merged into large listings of terms.
- For example, if you are looking for names of ships in inscriptions, visit (the SEG page)
- Click the Contents tab, just below the A to Z list
- Scroll down and click on Indices
- Look for Names of Ships (in fact this index is a bit broader) and click the link to open the complete keyword list.
- Once you click a term, the system will start a search for all records contain that keyword term.
3 Use the browse lists to consult Concordances
All the concordances that appear in the back of the printed volumes have been merged into large listings of terms.
- For example, if you are looking for a list of all inscription listed in the corpus IG I and mentioned in the SEG, visit (the SEG page)
- Click the Contents tab, just below the A to Z list
- Scroll down and click on Concordances
- Look for IG I and click the link to open the complete concordance.
- Once you click a term, the system will start a search for all records listed in the corpus IG I.
- Select the entry you need in the right column.
