1. Investigation of the Synoptic gospels in the 18th and 19th centuries produced a two-source theory according to which Matthew and Luke used not only Mark but also a collection of materials largely made up of sayings of Jesus. For want of a better title, this collection has come to be called “Q,” after Ger. Quelle, “source.” Synoptic comparison has made possible a hypothetical reconstruction of the wording and sequence of this nonextant collection.
