General remarksThe lying-in hospital was a clinical establishment primarily for single mothers (Ledige) to give birth in that became widespread in many parts of Europe from the mid-18th century on. In Germany, it acquired the primary function of providing practical teaching and training for midwives, surgeons, and doctors (Medic).
