A. Life Georg A. was a versatile German Humanist, scientist and founder of mineralogy. He was born on March 24, 1494 in Glauchau (Saxony), as Georg Pawer/Bauer (Latinized to Georgius Agricola), son of a clothmaker and dyer, and died on November 21, 1555 in Chemnitz. A. studied at Glauchau and Chemnitz, and was acquainted with the Humanists Stephan Roth and Valentin Hertel. He matriculated in 1514 at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Leipzig, studying with Erasmus' pupil Richard Croke, professor of Greek, and the Humanist and philologist Petrus Mosellanus (Schade).
