I. Social Facts The Republic of Uganda is a former British colony which became independent on 9 October 1962. The country has an area of 93,000 sq. km. According to the 2002 Uganda Population and Housing Report (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2002), Uganda had 24.4 million people in 2002, now estimated to be 35.9 million.
