Sino-Russian pidgins (SRPs) arose in the course of Russian trade with China and the Russian colonization of southern Siberia from the 17th century. Contacts with local ethnic groups were primarily restricted to standard situations, such as barter trade and fur tax collection. Russian-based pidgins emerged as auxiliary jargons that enabled this type of communication. There was no mass resettlement of people of different ethnicities who would have had to use pidgin as the sole means of communication.
