Derivation as the process and the result of formation in a language of any secondary unit from the original one is analyzed on the basis of language material from the majority of Slavic languages. The article discusses a number of authoritative theories in Slavic studies, which have influenced research into derivation processes in word formation, morphology, lexical semantics, phraseology, and syntax in Slavic languages. The focus of attention is word-formative derivation, the interpretation of its essence and boundaries in some Slavic languages, and its relation to morphological derivation.
