In 411 BC ‘the 400’ had the wall on the Eetionia made into a fort of the Piraius fortification (Munichia,  Athens [1]) (Aristot. Ath. Pol. 37; Thuc. 8,90-92). [German version] (ἄστυ; ásty). In a general sense, it means ‘town’ (also physically, in contrast with   polis = citizenry), in  Attica, it refers in a stricter sense to  Athens. In the classical period, of a total of 139 demes, about 42 belonged to the asty (one to eight per phyle, in three phyles -- Aeantis, Antiochis, and Pandionis -- the asty-trittys consisted of only one deme each) [2. table 1-10, map 1].
