Sailer as a student and later a colleague. After the Jesuit order was suppressed, he was able to keep his chair temporarily, but he was dismissed in 1781. In 1782 he was appointed to a parish in Kemnath (Upper Palatinate), but in 1788 he resigned and retreated into the life of an independent scholar in Munich. In this same year, he wrote his Anti-Kant polemic in opposition to Kant’s epistemology. From 1790 to 1794 he continued his campaign against I. Kant and especially Kant’s Catholic interpreters like S. Mutschelle from his position as ecclesiastical adviser and member of the council of censors. Roman criticism of his methodology and his Enlightenment ecclesiology ¶ crystallized in a threat to place some of his major works on the Index; when the threat was carried out in 1797, he resigned from his post. One of many figures associated with the Catholic Enlightenment (II, 4.f ), Sattler created a synthesis of reason and revelation to formulate a Demonstratio catholica (1775) of Christian truth, drawing heavily on C.
