BCE: the polemic conducted against him by the disciple of Aristarchus1, Menecrates of Nysa2 (2nd c. BCE; cf. Sch. Pind. O. 2, 16b-c), offers a terminus ante quem. His origin in Pergamum and his opposition to the positions of Aristarchus ( Sch. Pind. O. 2, 16b. 5, 1b) have led scholars to consider him a student of Crates of Mallos3 (as is argued by F.
