Landschaft A. erstreckte sich an der Nordküste der Peloponnesos von Kap Avgo im Osten bis Kap Araxos im Westen; sie ist in drei große geogr. unterschiedliche Bereiche zu gliedern [1. 164-198]. Der mittlere Teil der A. wird vom Massiv des Panachaicon dominiert, einem von Norden nach Süden verlaufenden Gebirgszug mit fast 2000 m hohen Gipfeln; trotz seiner einfachen Form durch seine Massigkeit beeindruckend, überragt er die gesamte achaiische Küste und hat damit gleichzeitig die Funktion einer Grenzregion zw. Osten und Westen. Im Süden wird A. durch die Gebirgsmassive des Erymanthos und der Aroania von Arkadia getrennt. Im Norden stellt der Golf von Korinth eine natürliche Grenze dar. Dagegen gehen die Ebenen West-A.s ohne irgendeine geogr. Markierung in die Landschaft Elis über, im Osten gehört Pellene seiner Lage nach mehr zu Arkadia oder auch zu Sikyon. Starke Kalksteinschwellen streichen vom Gebirge her nordwärts bis zum Meer und schaffen eine Reihe kleiner Küstenebenen, die untereinander fast völlig abgeschlossen sind. A. trug damals den Namen Ἀγιαλός, Ἀγιάλεια (Strab. 8,7,1; Apollod. 2,1,1; Paus. 2,5,6; 5,1,1; 7,1,1), umfaßte aber bei Hom. Il. 2,573-575 den Westteil der späteren A. nicht: Es scheint, als ob Ost-A. Rückzugsgebiet der Mykener (Mykene) vor den andringenden griech. Völkerschaften gewesen sei [2. 458]. Danach könnten nach der sagenhaften Überlieferung dort Griechen der ersten Wanderungswelle, später als Iones bezeichnet, gesiedelt haben [3. 341-347]. Die A. sind später, wohl in Zusammenhang mit der dorischen Wanderung, gekommen und haben den gesamten Landstrich in Besitz genommen. Ob die in hethit. Texten erwähnten Achijawa mit den Ἀχαιοί gleichgesetzt werden können, ist fraglich [4; 5]. Im Epos wurden unter den Ἀχαιοί Gefolgsleute des Agamemnon und des Achilleus verstanden, Ἀχαιοί waren gleichbedeutend mit den vor Troia versammelten Griechen insgesamt [17. 350]. In histor. Zeit war der ethnische Begriff nicht auf die Nordküste der Peloponnesos, sondern auch auf Südostthessalien (Thessalien) beschränkt (Ἀχαία Φθιῶτις). Bis zur Großen Kolonisation war bei den A. der arkado-kyprische Dialekt offenbar üblich, wie Sprachreste aus Metapontion zeigen; in histor. Zeit sprachen die A. eine dorische κοινή [6. 221-224, 248-262, 456-457]. Schon bei den Iones war das gesamte achaiische Gebiet in 12 Teile (Distrikte, μέρεα, μέρη) gegliedert (Hdt. 1,145; Strab. 8,7,4): Pellene, Aigeira, Aigai, Bura, Helike, Aigion, Rhypes, Patrai, Pharai, Olenos, Dyme, Tritaia. Die Umwandlung dieser Distrikte in Poleis ist nicht einfach zu belegen [2. 466-473; 7]; die Aufzählung dieser 12 Teile, die vermutlich durch die geogr. Gliederung der Landschaft ganz natürlich entstanden sind, ergibt jedoch die Ausdehnung der Landschaft und ermöglicht die Eintragung ihrer Grenzen.
