As a university student Mott was present in 1886 at the founding of the Student Volunteer Movement (SVM). Upon graduation in 1888 Mott joined the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). His outstanding leadership and administrative gifts were quickly recognized. Mott was YMCA student secretary (1889–1915) and general secretary (1915–1931). He was a leader of the SVM, founded the World's Student Christian Federation (1895) and helped organize the 1910 World Missionary Conference (Edinburgh Conference). In 1912–1913 Mott traveled in Asia and Africa holding consultations that prepared the way for the organization of national councils of churches. In 1921 he helped organize the International Missionary Council. He continued his many efforts on behalf of Christian unity, justice and world peace, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946. When the World Council of Churches was officially …
