Saint, from a noble family, born AD 354 in Rome, died 445 in Troy near Memphis in Egypt. Emperor Theodosius I invited him to Constantinople to bring up his children Arcadius and Honorius. After many years in the imperial palace A. returned to Egypt and lived as a hermit. A biographic legend is to be found in Simeon Metaphrastes. The teachings for monks and apophthegmata ascribed to him are of very doubtful authenticity.
