(Jan 5, 1846, Aurich – Sep 15, 1926, Jena), a fashionable philosopher of cultural Protestantism, studied classical philology and philosophy at Göttingen with R.H. Lotze and Gustav Teichmüller (1832–1888) from 1863 to 1867. While writing his dissertation on Aristotle's language, he corresponded with F.A. Trendelenburg. From 1871 to 1874 he taught philosophy and education in Basel and from 1874 to 1920 he taught philosophy in Jena. Popular versions of his academic works went through many printings, both in Germany and abroad.…
