The University of Greifswald opened on Oct 17, 1456. The mayor and jurist Heinrich Rubenow (murdered in 1462) must be considered its actual founder. The founding was associated with the establishment of a collegiate convent in 1457 at St. Nikolai, on whose 20 benefices the professors were appointed.
