[German version] [1] Macedonian commander (320-319 BC) Son of Iolaus,  399/398 BC, was certainly already active militarily and diplomatically under  Philippus and under his father  Amyntas and brothers. He was especially connected with  Alexander [4] and secured his throne after the murder of Philippus. During Alexander's invasion in Asia he remained with half of the Macedonian army as governor of Europe. He monitored Greece and sent mercenaries and Macedonian contingents during the first year of the campaign. He settled Memnon's attempt to create a factional split in Thrace (331) without shedding blood, but then he had to give his time to a major war ignited by  Agis [3]. With the help of enormous sums of money, which he received from the king, he was able in the spring of 330 to annihilate Agis with great superiority of military power at  Megalopolis. Constantly treated with hostility by  Olympias and slandered before the king, after Alexander's return from India, he was recalled to the court and  Craterus was selected as his successor. However, he sent his sons  Iolaus and   Cassander only as hostages, who were later suspected of having poisoned Alexander. In the great Greek revolt after the death of Alexander ( Lamian War) he was besieged in  Lamia and was only saved through the death of  Leosthenes the commander of the alliance.
