Ugaritic is the ancient Northwest Semitic language that was spoken in the late Bronze Age in the Kingdom of Ugarit (on the coast of modern Syria) until its final destruction ca. 1185 B.C.E. The first texts were discovered in 1929. Almost all come from the city of Ugarit (Ras Shamra) or the nearby site of Ras ibn Hani, but isolated inscriptions have been found as far away as Beth Shemesh and Tiryns, Greece (see Dietrich and Loretz 1988:205–267; Sanders 2006; and Cohen et al. 2011).
