Hasidism—a Jewish Awakening Movement 1. Hasidism, a mystical awakening movement in Judaism, arose in Eastern Europe around mid-eighteenth century. Since the → Shoa, it has maintained its centers in New York and Israel. Israel ben Elieser (“ Ba'al Shem [Tov],” c. 1700–1760) is the founder of the movement, which was systematically organized by his successor Dov Ber (d. 1772), the Maggid (“Preacher”) from Mesritsh, and propagated through emissaries.
