Bei Aristoteles wird unter T. ein Argumentationsmuster verstanden, mit dem man, von einem vorbestimmten festen Ort (griech. tópos) ausgehend, dessen Voraussetzungen, die Prämissen, ermitteln kann. Zugleich dient die T. in der Rhetorik als Teil der Lehre zur Auffindung der Redeinhalte (lat. inventio) [3].
