Bereits seit dem MA versteht man darunter in der geistlichen einstimmigen Musik eine Melodie, die in gleichmäßigen Zeitwerten fortschreitet. Mit Entstehung der Mehrstimmigkeit wird C. F. auch als Bezeichnung für eine präexistente Melodie verwendet, die als Ausgangsbasis einer Komposition dient.
