I. Social Facts Western Sahara is located in the western part of North Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco, Algeria, and Mauritania. An official census has not been performed in Western Sahara since 1974, before the Spanish gave up their claim to the region. The CIA World Factbook estimates the population to be 555,000 as of July 2014. Two governments lay claim to the region: Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).
