Ḳurrāʾ

Author(s): Nagel, T.
Political organisation. The term ḳurrāʾ , sing. ḳāriʾ (A.), occurs in Arabic historiography referring to a group of ʿIrāḳians rising against ʿUt̲h̲mān and later on against ʿAlī, after he had accepted the arbitration. In European research, ḳurrāʾ has been usually rendered as “reciters of the Ḳurʾān” ( ḳurrāʾ < ḳ-r-ʾ “to recite”). Brünnow was the first historian to try to assess the role of the ḳurrāʾ as an independent group acting within a heterogeneous K̲h̲ārid̲j̲ite [ q.v.] movement. Brünnow’s results were partly rejected by Wellhausen, who held that the ḳurrāʾ were not an autonomo…

, Ṣāḥib Ḳiṣaṣ al-Anbiyāʾ , unknown author of a famous Arabic work on the lives of the prophets and pious men prior to Muḥammad. Some small passages of this book were first edited in 1898 by I. Eisenberg in his thesis on Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kisāʾī. A complete edition was published in 1922. In his thesis, Eisenberg tried to prove that the author of the Ḳiṣaṣ al-anbiyāʾ was the well-known philologist al-Kisāʾī, to whom Hārūn al-Ras̲h̲īd had entrusted the education of his sons al-Amīn and al-Maʾmūn. But what renders this identification impossible is that Ibn an-Nadīm in his Fihrist

, the “legends of the pre-Islamic prophets”, is the title of several works relating the lives of the prophets of the Old Testament, the story of Jesus, and some other events into which pious heroes or enemies of God are involved ¶ (on the etymology of ḳiṣṣa = “story”, see ḳiṣṣa ). Very famous and widely-spread books on this subject were the ʿArāʾis al-mad̲j̲ālis by Abū Isḥāḳ Aḥmad al-T̲h̲aʿlabī (d. 427/1036) and the different versions of the Ḳiṣaṣ written down in the name of a certain Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kisāʾī [see al-kisāʾi ]. The origins of this type of literature must be traced…

(a.; sing.

Theology and the Qurʾān

(12,243 words)

Author(s): Nagel, T.
The Qurʾān displays a wide range of theological topics related to the religious thought of late antiquity and through its prophet Muḥammad presents a coherent vision of the creator, the cosmos and man. The main issues of Muslim theological dispute prove to be hidden under the wording of the qurʾānic message, which is closely tied to Muḥammad's biography (see sīra and the qurʾān ). Preliminary remarks Dealing with theology and the Qurʾān means looking in two different directions at the same time. On the one hand, the qurʾānic message plays an important role in …
