(962 words)
Entry Version: This is the
English version of this article translated by Patrick Hogan. The original Italian version was written by Claudio Meliadò and published on 04/04/2019. Here is the Italian version of this entry. Grammarian: Name: Theodorus [4] Panages | Θεόδωρος ὁ παναγής Identity: BNJ Place of Origin: Athens (?) Date: ? ↓ To Source List Biography: A grammarian1 perhaps of Athenian origin and nicknamed ὁ παναγής, this Theodorus was identified by Jacoby (1923–1958, 3b (
Kommentar), p. 112 and n. 3, (
Noten), p. 80 [BrillOnline]), following Susemihl (1892, p. 188) with the Theodorus2 to whom Athenaeus3 ascribed the Ἀττικαὶ γλῶσσαι (14, 646c4. 15, 678d5) or Ἀττικαὶ φωναί (15, 677b6), but recently Hashiba (2011; [BrillOnline]) has expressed some scepticism about this. Theodorus was the author of a work in several books on the γένος Κηρύκων, a priestly family of Eleusis (cf.,
e.g., Aristot.
Ath. 39, fr. 385 Rose7; Hirschberger 2004, p. 480), to which he probably belonged (cf. Dittenberger 1885, p. 27; Toepffer 1889, p. 90; Clinton 1974, p. 96). This work is the source of the sole direct quotation of Theodorus, preserved by Phot.
