[German Version] The biblical picture of Samuel (Heb. לאֵוּמשְׁ/ šĕmû’ēl), a figure at the transition from premonarchic Israel (II, 1) to the monarchy, is extremely complex. In the relatively earliest source, 1 Samuel, and then afterwards he fills an extraordinary spectrum of roles: priest (1 Sam 2f.; 7:9; cf. his Levitical descent in 1 Chr 6:12, 18 [Eng. 6:27, 33]), prophet (Prophets and Prophecy: II; 1 Sam 3:20; 9:1–10:16; 19:18–24; 28; Jer 15:1; Ps 99:6; Sir 46:15, 20; Acts 3:24), judge (Judges of Israel; 1 Sam 7:15; 12:1–5; Sir 46:14; Acts 13:20), savior (1 Sam 7:7–14; Sir 46:16–18), and especially “kingmaker” (1 Sam 8–11; 16:1–13; Sir 46:13) and “unmaker” (1 Sam 13:8–15; 15). A few texts in which he plays a central role are probably late (1 Sam 8; 10:17ff.; 12); in other, earlier texts, his appearance is a later addition (1 Sam 9:1–10:16; 11; 13f.; 15?; 28). The earliest traditions concerning him are probably found in 1 Sam *1f.; and 7:15. They describe him as a child of Hannah and Elkanah from Ramathaim in Ephraim (cf. also the burial note in 1 Sam 25:1; 28:3); he was brought up at the sanctuary in Shiloh to the priest (and tribune?) Eli and later was active as a judge (and tribune?) in the borderland of Ephraim and Benjamin. It was therefore natural for later tradition to associate him with Saul, a Benjaminite. The proverbial association of the first king with prophetic circles (1 Sam 9:1–10:16, esp. 10:9–13) created the connection with Samuel and encouraged the transformation of the latter into a prophet. Samuel and Saul (between whose names the birth narrative in 1 Sam 1 already oscillates) became prototypes of the duality of religious and political office. Worldly power is granted by God – and in some cases may be taken away. In the biblical account, both actions are mediated by the figure of Samuel. Deeply skeptical about monarchy (Kingship [in Israel]; 1 Sam 8; 12), he lets God show him whom God has elected, installs him (1 Sam 9f.), and accompanies him on his campaigns (1 Sam 11; 13; 15). Observing the increased independence of the king’s political power, he rejects Saul and anoints David (16:1–13), protects him from Saul (19:18–24), and confirms Saul’s rejection once more posthumously (28:17–19). We can see how Samuel was first included in the pro-Saul tradition of Northern Israel, then the pro-David tradition of Judah, and finally the fundamental debate over the monarchy.
