He was called by some a “herald of a new poetic age,” combining musical and literary sensibility in new ways in his compositional style. Schumann’s ability as an essayist and critic achieved some notoriety in his writing as a music critic between 1831 and 1844, well into his career as a composer. Admitted to the Zwickau Lyceum in 1820, Schumann displayed equally strong talent in poetry, literature, and composition. He was greatly influenced by the literary figure, Jean Paul, and the music of F. Schubert. In 1828 Schumann enrolled as a law student at the University of Leipzig, but soon neglected law to pursue his artistic interests. In August 1828, he began piano study with Friedrich Wieck, a noted teacher of the time, in whose house Schumann lived for a time in 1830.
