Les diverses formes dialectales ( bäg, bäk, bek, bey, biy, bī, pig, etc.) remontent toutes au turc ancien bäg, attesté dans les inscriptions de l’Orkhon (VIIIe s.) et dans des transcriptions chinoises concernant les Türks de Mongolie à la même époque. Le mot n’a pas d’étymologie altaïque (mongol begi est un emprunt tardif au turc; la série: turc bärk, bäk/mongol bärkä, bäki «fort, solide», etc., ne peut rendre compte du turc ancien bäg et doit en être dissociée; de même pour la série: turc bögü, bög «sage, sorcier» /mongol böge,…
