In his youth he served, together with other mutakallimūn like Muʿammar, Ḥafṣ al-Fard and Abū S̲h̲amir al-Ḥanafī, as adlatus ( g̲h̲ulām ) to Maʿmar Abu ’l-As̲h̲ʿat̲h̲, a Baṣran physician with certain “philosophical” leanings (cf.
