This figure was fleshed out in mythical stories and satyr plays. The 'Midas-silen' expresses a pessimistic thought to the Phrygian king Midas, a thought typical for the Archaic period and consistent with Dionysian ideas. [3]) and in a divergent version in Athenaeus (fr. 1,1-47; cf. [1.621 f.]); the speaker portrays his annoyance with a cook who expresses himself only in incomprehensible Homeric glosses.
