Epiphanius
(956 words)
(Ἐπιφάνιος;
Epiphánios). [1] of Salamis Ascetic and priest [German version] A. Biography E. was born between 310 and 320 in the Palestinian Beṯ Guvrin/Eleutheropolis (short biography in GCS Epiphanius 1,1 Holl), more precisely in the nearby village of Besanduke/Beṯ Zedek (= Dair Saad?), probably as the son of Christian parents. He became an ascetic early on in his life, and in conjunction with that may have spent longer periods in Egypt (Sozom. Hist. eccl. 6,32,3); at the age of about 20, he founded a monastery in his home village. At about the same time, he was ordained to the priesthood. The extent of his fame is well illustrated by the fact that in 367 (or 366) he was elected bishop of Constantia/Salamis on Cyprus. On the other hand, for reasons no longer known, he did not succeed his local bishop Eutychius of Eleutheropolis after the latter's death after 363. In 374, he tried in vain to mediate between the parties in the Antiochene schism. In his episcopate, he was particularly concerned with safeguarding the ‘orthodoxy’ of the Church: in 382 he took part in a Roman synod, and together with Hieronymus, spearheaded the opposition to the Origenist position. In 390, he engaged his fellow bishop Iohannes of Jerusalem in a kind of ‘sermonical duel’ (Jer. Contra Iohannes Hierosolymitanum 11), and continued his fight against him for several years, during which time he presumably stayed in Palestine. Following mediation by the Alexandrian bishop Theophilus (Socr. 6,10), the two opponents were reconciled. In the spring of 396…
