(Malay pronunciation Abdullah bin Abdulkadir), surnamed Muns̲h̲iʾ , i.e. teacher of languages, was "the greatest innovator in Malay letters" (R. O. Winstedt, A history of Malay literature, JMBRAS, 1940, ch. xii). He was born in 1796 in Malacca, where his grandfather, the son of S̲h̲ayk̲h̲ ʿAbd al-Ḳādir, who came originally from Yaman, had settled.
