Die griech. Geographen hatten schon früh eine vage Kunde vom Rh. Sie ließen ihn in die Maiotis münden. Um die Wende zum 1. Jh. n. Chr. wurde der Rh. der röm. Geogr. bekannt: Marinos [1] (und Ptolemaios) entwarfen ein überraschend getreues kartographisches Bild des Flusses. The name of what are today the Circassians was known to Greek geographers early on, but the details they provide about where the C. lived do not agree with each other (according to Str. 11,492; 496f. between the  Heniochi and the  Moschi).
