A. Concept and ancient originsThe term E., from the Greek éthnos ('people', 'nation') and  gráphein ('to write'), denotes the description of ethnic groups or cultures. The neologism ( Ethnographie in German) is traced back to the Göttingen scholars Johann Christoph Gatterer (Prof. Ord. in history at Göttingen University) and August Ludwig Schlözer.
